New York DECA Membership,
I hope that the beginning of school
has not created too much stress for you all, and that you are starting
to get excited for the upcoming DECA year. As an executive council
we have been working assiduously to make sure that this year will
prove enjoyable and live up to its heightened potential.
I hope that DECA week was exciting
and enjoyable, and that everyone is looking forward to the SoNAR
conference. The Executive Council would love to hear from the membership
about their experiences during DECA week and SoNAR. We encourage
you to send articles, pictures, and general comments about the start
of your DECA year to any member of the Executive Council so we can
put them up in the next ECC.
In addition, there are two significant
developments in which I am personally involved in with very promising
news. The Executive Council has developed a design for the State
Sales project T-Shirts-a retro/classic baseball style T-Shirt that
we know the membership will embrace fantastically. Second, a letter
has been drafted which will be sent out to political and business
leaders whom we hope will come and speak at the State Career Conference.
Lastly, the Executive Council has
received very little communication from members through out the
state. We have reinstated the ECC so we can hear from you, the membership!
I deeply hope to hear from some of you and look forward to working
together to make this DECA year a complete success.
Yours truly,
Shaun Werbelow

Fall Leadership Conference/SoNAR
Conference: Washington D.C. November 3-5
State Career Conference: Rochester, New York March 7-9
International Career Development Conference: Orlando, Florida April
28-May 2
This year the Board of Trustees and
State Officers have decided to continue with an extremely successful
program started last year. We will be combining the SONAR Conference
in Washington, DC with our own New York State Fall Conference, also
to be held in Washington. This promises to be one the best events
of our DECA year. Everyone on the Executive Council is very excited
about having a conference in our Nation's Capitol, especially in
conjunction with the National Conference which will include students
from states in both the Northeastern and Southern Regions.
The Fall Conference, which will be
held immediately before the SONAR Conference, has been in planning
for months at Board Meetings and in the deliberations of the State
Officers. We have several interactive and informative workshops
for which everyone will have an opportunity to take part. They range
from urban planning to running for state office. Take advantage
of this first conference with our state to meet with as many fellow
New York DECA members as you can.
The New York State Fall Conference
is only the first part of our time in Washington. With little time
to stop and catch our breath after the conclusion of the Fall Conference,
we will be at the electrifying opening of the SONAR conference with
all of the states from the North Atlantic and Southern Regions.
Expect opening ceremonies to be loud, engaging, and even a little
boisterous. Afterwards, expect entertainment and a chance to mingle
and network with students from the North Atlantic and Southern Regions.
The SONAR Conference will have many
workshops, and will provide members the chance to refine their skills.
Many new members will be present, so our advice to you is - use
the conference as an opportunity to prepare for your competitions,
and to start making connections with students across the state.
And on top of all of this, we are
still in the Capitol. Tours will be available for everyone to tour
the monuments and other beautiful sights in Washington DC. Make
sure to check with your advisors on which tours you will be taking.
We look forward to seeing all of you, and are looking forward to
a great experience for our entire New York State DECA Organization
As all of us start thinking of activities
we need to partake in this year, fundraising for the Marty Lyons
Foundation should be one of the top priorities.
This year, we have undertaken an extremely
unique goal regarding our Community Service Project. Sameer has
been in contact with some of the directors of the foundation, and
they have agreed to come to the Fall Conference to talk about their
charity! This will be vital for you, the members, to be able to
appreciate what the Marty Lyons Foundation does.
All chapter officers that are reading
this should start thinking of ideas to raise money for our charity.
Hopefully some of your fundraising ideas will gain media attention!
Here are some ideas to start you on
the right track. Many chapters are already raising a lot of money
through bake sales and pizza sales. These are really very simple
ideas, but they raise tons of money. Bring this up within your chapter
and do one once a week.
If you are looking for something a
little bit more unique, there are still plenty of activities you
can come up with. For example, during back to school night, Sameer's
chapter sold little paper footballs (because Marty Lyons was a football
player). Parents, teachers, and students could all buy the footballs,
write their names on them, and hang them up throughout the school.
Elections are coming up for many regions.
We encourage all potential regional officers to initiate fundraising
activities for your region as a whole.
All of these are great ideas and they
will help you raise a substantial amount of money for our charity.
Remember, you should all be ready to start up your fundraising soon.
Raise as much money for the Marty Lyons Foundation as possible.
Keep in mind that the chapter that raises the most money will get
recognition at states, and every chapter that participates will
be called up to the stage. Please get all checks to me, Sameer Iyer,
by Monday, January 8th, 2007. All of the forms you need can be found
in the Fall Packet on the New York DECA website. As always, feel
free to contact the Executive Council with questions, comments,
or even new fundraising ideas that we haven't mentioned.
