New York DECA Membership,

Everyone is settling into their back to school routine, giving chapter and regional officers the perfect opportunity to gain new members. Find new students, and make them members; put DECA into their routines! The main focus of this month's issue is your Executive Council trying to give you their advice on how to gain new members. If this isn't enough, feel free to email any officer for discussion on how to go about encouraging students to join.

The Executive Council Communicator is my main concentration. It will continuously be updated, with more information and guidance in every issue. This is my plea; let us highlight different chapters within each issue by emailing me articles whenever possible! You can reach me at juliadale@hotmail.com. As stated in our previous issue, there will be an award for the best ECC Contributor. Furthermore our tee-shirts for the State Sales Project are a fashionable baseball tee, so take full advantage of that change in design from other DECA attire. Last but not least, check out your DECA knowledge in our DECA Trivia, which will be sure to highlight and excite every issue.

Sincerely,

Julia Rosse

STATE SALES PROJECT

As we approach the beginning of a new DECA year, we would like all of you to represent New York DECA by purchasing and wearing our State tee shirts.

The tee shirts will be appealing because of their "retro" baseball style and their classy color combination of blue and yellow. This will allow you to both represent New York DECA, on top of wearing the shirts for casual purposes.

The tee shirts can either be purchased at DECA conferences such as the Fall Conference, SoNAR, and State Career Conference, or through an order form that can be found in the Fall Packet and on our website (www.newyorkdeca.org).

We encourage all of you to support New York DECA and purchase a shirt because it can serve as a memento that captures the spirit of our organization. Also, with your cooperation, we can all wear the shirts on the same day at SoNAR or ICDC so that we can represent New York DECA.

The Executive Council appreciates any purchases you may make to support your organization.

How To Recruit New Members

Building a DECA chapter at a school where the organization is not already ingrained the student body can be a challenge. Recruiting new members every year can be equally as difficult. Here are some tips on how to build a larger membership, how to find new members to join, and finally how to keep members on board so that your DECA chapter continues to thrive.

  • Advertising DECA around the school is important.
It is important to get the word out around your school that DECA is starting, and that all business students should look to learn more about the organization. Put up announcements in the morning, hang posters, and pass out flyers. Another effective method is to have every business teacher say something to every class they have. This way, you are guaranteed that every business student is targeted.
  • Personal contact is extremely important
Of course, it is to your advantage to promote DECA as much as you possibly can through advertising. However, never forget the importance of personal contact, and asking students directly to join the club. A majority of your new members and retained members will be those who are spoken to directly and personally, convinced of the benefits and opportunity DECA has to offer, and fulfilled with the feeling of involvement due to a personalized conversation. Take time, and have your colleagues take time, to walk around and speak to students about the chapter and its various facets. This will ensure a strong and enthusiastic membership base.
  • Promote DECA as an eclectic organization
There are many students who are drawn to the professional and competitive culture of DECA. Chances are, those kinds of students are already a part of the organization. If they are not, then make sure to focus resources on recruiting them, because they will become some of your strongest members. However, many students join clubs that offer more than just competition and a chance to thrive in a more professional setting. Make sure to get across to students that DECA has much more to offer than just that. Emphasize the social components of DECA, make sure everyone knows about the travel, and new people, and the activities on a chapter, regional, and state level other than competition. Show them how much falls under the title, how much there is to be gained and experienced, and more student will be attracted to joining.

College(s) of the Month

Featuring SUNY New Paltz

SUNY New Paltz can be found between the Hudson River and the majestic Shawangunk Mountains in upstate New York. Located an hour and a half outside of New York City, this campus has a wide variety of activities for its students. In the newly renovated gymnasium there are many sports offered, both club and varsity. Some of these division III sports include baseball, basketball, field hockey, swimming, and volleyball, just to name a few.

While SUNY New Paltz is very appealing, grades are always the start to getting into the school of your choice. SUNY New Paltz recommends that you have at least 1160 on your SAT and 25 on your ACT. To attract students, SUNY New Paltz has a great selection of both majors and minors. The most popular majors include education, communications, science, and art.
